rode in silence all the way to his apartment, watching out the windows, his eyes scanning the sides of the road, knowing all the while that he wasn’t going to find anything. When he was home, he paid the driver, went upstairs, and let himself in.

He sat for a long time at his kitchen table, staring at an open bottle of beer that he never drank. He felt a strange tightness in his chest, alternating with a hollowness that was like nothing he’d ever felt. He wasn’t hungry. He wasn’t thirsty. He wasn’t anything.

Just sad. He felt heavy and lost and very, very sad.

After a while, he felt something warm inside his pocket; when he reached in, he found the coin that had been his St. Thomas medal glowing softly, still bearing the image of the fox. He swallowed another wave of sorrow, pocketed the coin, stood wearily, and then went to the bathroom. He used the toilet, took a shower, and fell onto his bed, naked and clutching the coin.

He fell asleep immediately, and he dreamed he was running through the stars, chasing a woman who turned into a fox with nine tails, but he never found her. When he woke, it was dark, and his chest hurt. He touched his face and was surprised to find that his eyes were swollen and that his cheeks and pillow were wet with his tears. He got dressed, ate a can of soup without tasting it, and then, though he didn’t know why, grabbed his keys, and left.

The city was humming quietly around him as he pulled his car out of the lot and onto the freeway. Traffic, as usual, was abysmal, but Hal barely noticed. He didn’t even turn on his radio. He just drove, not really knowing where he was going, until he found himself, unsurprisingly, back at the empty lot beside the construction site. He parked illegally and then sat on the curb beside his car and stared at the place where the bar had been. In the dark of night, it was little more than a gaping black hole.
